Despite their names, compact sedans offer a lot of interior space for passengers combined with a small exterior footprint for easy maneuvering and parking. Two of the most popular and affordable models are the 2022 Hyundai Elantra and 2022 Honda Civic.
Both were redesigned within the past year–the Elantra in 2021 and the Civic in 2022–and are great vehicles for drivers. However, with a lower price tag, better warranty, and more standard features, the Elantra is the model to choose.
Affordability
Starting at $17,999, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra is offered in Kanata and across Canada in three trim levels: Essential, Preferred, and Ultimate. At $21,999, the Preferred model most closely matches the base 2022 Honda Civic. The Preferred comes at a starting price of $21,999.
Starting at $24,465, the 2022 Honda Civic is offered four trim levels in Canada: LX, EX, Sport, and Touring. The base model LX includes Honda’s safety package, but it still comes at a price almost $2,500 over the Elantra.
Warranty Coverage
There is no beating Hyundai’s warranty coverage. The manufacturer’s 10-year/100,000-km powertrain warranty is legendary, and it is in addition to a 5-year/60,000-km limited warranty. Hyundai also provides three years or 36,000 kilometres of complimentary scheduled maintenance.
In comparison, Honda’s standard warranty package is merely average. It offers no complimentary scheduled maintenance and a powertrain warranty that covers five years (or 60,000 km) and a limited warranty that covers three years (or 36,000km).
Safety Features
Hyundai SmartSense is the manufacturer’s suite of available safety features to provide drivers with confidence and added peace of mind. This includes adaptive cruise control with traffic stop and go, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, driver attention warning, forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, and so much more.
Honda also offers safety and driver assisted technology, but the list is not as extensive as Hyundai’s standard features and does not include blind-spot monitoring, parking collision avoidance assist, and safe exit warning, among others without additional cost.
Infotainment
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra has a standard infotainment setup that features an 8.0-inch centre display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi connection.
The 2022 Honda Civic also offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth, but it displays everything on a 7.0-inch touchscreen that is smaller than the Elantra’s offering. It also does not offer a Wi-Fi hotspot on any model.
Styling
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra features a bold and unique exterior styling that seamlessly moves to the inside as well. Its attractive look hides the fact that it is a spacious, practical, and efficient sedan.
The 2022 Honda Civic got a more upscale appearance with its redesign, but it is still easily recognisable as a Civic. It does not offer any flair to drivers.
Fuel Economy
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra provides 7.6 L/100km city and 5.7 L/100km highway fuel economy for drivers in Kanata. The Civic cannot match those numbers, as it only offers 7.7 L/100km city and 6.0 L/100km highway fuel economy.
2022 Hyundai Elantra vs 2022 Honda Civic in Kanata
After a thorough comparison, it is easy to see that the 2022 Hyundai Elantra is the more affordable, more efficient, and better styled compact sedan for drivers in Kanata.
